River Front Campgrounds

Golden Rock Campgrounds:
This is our very own campground located riverside at Compton Rapid, the prettiest spot on the river. This small campground is only available to persons or groups participating in a river trip with Downriver Canoe Company and on some very busy weekends may also be restricted to those participating in multi day river trips. Tent camping only is allowed, no RV's or pop-ups. Call Downriver Canoe Company for more details at 800-338-1963 or downriver.com
Low Water Bridge:
Located just across the low water bridge from Downriver Canoe Company base in Bentonville, this small, friendly riverside campground offers a total of sixty sites, many with hook-ups for RV's, and many right on the river. Massanutten Canoe Company Campground:
They no longer do river trips, but all of the ten large campsites are right on the river (but you have to share it with the cows). Located just five miles up river from Downriver Canoe Company. Reservations only, no hook-ups, tent camping only. (540) 636-4724 or Google it.
Jr's Campground:
Nestled in a beautiful riverside setting fifteen miles up river from Downriver Canoe Company, this lovely, small campground offers tent camping only with no hook-ups. The owner is a retired dairy farmer, a very interesting person if a bit eccentric. (540)743-3298 no website
River Right Campground:
This campground is part of the relatively new Andy Guest Shenandoah River State Park which borders Downriver Canoe Company's base in Bentonville. The campground is located four miles downstream from Downriver Canoe Company. There are only nine beautiful sites along the river, tent camping only, no hook-ups. You must reserve through the Virginia State Park system at 800-433-park.
Ruffner's Campground:
Located twenty-two miles up river from Downriver Canoe Company. This lovely campground has a beautiful riverside setting, but it is tiny. Tent camping only, no hook-ups. Reservations only. (540) 743-5753 no website
Outlanders Campground:
Located about 30 minutes south of Downriver Canoe Company this newly opened campground is on the river just west of Luray. (540)743-5540 outlandersrivercamp.com

Larger Commercial Campgrounds

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park:
A first rate, large commercial campground located about twenty minutes south of Downriver Canoe Company. They have excellent facilities with mini-golf, two big swimming pools, and even a 400-foot water slide. Most sites have full hook-ups, and they have both rustic and full service cabins. 800-420-6679 www.campluray.com
Country Waye Campground:
A quiet, smaller RV campground located about fifteen minutes south of Downriver Canoe Company. Mid valley location with great views and camping cabins available. Different and Delightful. 888-765-7222 www.shentel-net/countryway
Front Royal RV Campground:
Rustic mountainside location about fifteen minutes north of Downriver Canoe Company with full hook-ups, camping cabins, and a large waterslide. (540) 635-2741 www.frontroyalrvcampground.com

National Forrest Campgrounds

Elizabeth Furnace Campground:
Located about twelve miles of back road from Downriver Canoe Company, this lovely, wooded campground is located along Passage Creek in the George Washington National Forest at the entrance to Fort Valley. Google it
Camp Roosevelt:
Located about thirty miles from Downriver Canoe Company this remote campground is deep in the national forest in upper Fort Valley. Again, Google it for up to date information from the forest service.

Shenandoah National PArks Campgrounds

Mathews Arm Campground:
Located about a forty-five minute drive from Downriver Canoe Company in the northern section of Shenandoah National Park (but only about 6 miles from us as the crow flies). Rustic tent and RV camping on top of the mountain in a wooded location, no open campfires allowed.
Big Meadows Campground:
Again, camping in a serene wooded mountain top setting, no fires. Located about an hour's drive from Downriver Canoe Company in the central section of the park.

Cabins and B&B's

There must be close to a hundred cabins available for rent within an hour's drive of Downriver Canoe Company. The overwhelming majority are quite nice, but cabins are constantly being added and deleted. For an up to date list please refer to our excellent local chamber of commerce web sites. Page County website at www.luraypage.com/accommodations.htm (Page County has recently been declared the "cabin capital of Virginia"), and you may wish to refer to www.discoverfrontroyal.com for more cabin listings in Warren County. In addition there is a cabin listing service at www.allstarlodging.com that may be helpful.

Other Activities in the Shenandoah Valley

Luray Caverns
By far the biggest and the best (and most expensive of course). Great hedge maze, superb car museum, and a new local history museum.
Skyline Caverns
Much smaller and more intimate, avoid the crowds
Shenandoah National Park
A 197,000 acre mountain wonderland. Great vistas from Skyline Drive and wonderful hiking trails.
Antiqueing
Many options along beautiful old route 11 from Strasburg to Harrisonburg passing through many little towns preserved when traffic was diverted to Interstate 81 forty years ago.
Horseback Riding
A number of liveries in the Valley let you exercise your backside
Massanutten Water Park
A large new indoor/outdoor water park open year round
Civil War Battlefields
The Civil War raged in the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester alone changed hands 72 times.
