Map to Downriver
From Baltimore

There are two ways to go. You may wish to take Interstate 95 or the Baltimore Washington Parkway south to the Washington D.C. Beltway. Take the Beltway west toward Rockville and follow it around into Virginia exiting on to Interstate 66 west and follow the directions from Washington D.C. A second way from Baltimore is to follow Interstate 70 west to Frederick Maryland. In Frederick pick up route 340 south and follow it 47 miles to Front Royal. From Front Royal continue south on route 340 another 10 miles to the village of Bentonville. Just past a big white church in Bentonville, turn right on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road). Go one mile. As you emerge from the woods you will encounter two outfitters. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the adventure begins.

From Charlottesville

From Charlottesville follow route 29 north about 27 miles to Madison. From Madison follow route 231 north about 24 miles to Sperryville. (This section of route 231 is one of the most beautiful drives that exists on the face of God's green earth). From Sperryville follow route 211 west 14 miles over the mountain to Luray. From Luray follow route 340 north about 14 miles to the village of Bentonville. In Bentonville turn left on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it one mile down the hill to the river. There are two separate outfitters at the river so it can be confusing. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the adventure begins. (Driving time is about an hour and a half.)

From Fredericksburg

From Fredericksburg follow route 17 north about 35 miles to Warrenton. Stay on 17 north through Warrenton and follow it about 10 more miles to Marshall. Just before Marshall pick up Interstate 66 west and follow it 15 miles to exit 13 marked Front Royal, Linden. Exit the interstate here and pick up route 55 west. Follow route 55 west 5 miles into Front Royal. At the third traffic light in Front Royal turn left on to route 340 south. Follow 340 south 10 miles to the village of Bentonville. In Bentonville turn right on to Route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it one mile down a winding road to the river. There are two separate outfitters at the river, so it can be confusing. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the adventure begins. (Driving time is about two hours.)

From Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg is only about an hour away. Simply follow Interstate 81 north about 18 miles to exit 264 marked New Market. Exit the interstate here and pick up route 211 east. Follow 211 east about 14 miles to Luray. In Luray pick up route 340 north and follow it 14 miles to the village of Bentonville. In Bentonville turn left on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it one mile down a winding road to the river. There are two separate outfitters at the river, so it can be confusing. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the adventure begins.

From New Orleans

Go north to St. Louis; turn right, drive for, I donno, maybe 600 miles; look for signs.

From Richmond

From Richmond the simplest way would be to take Interstate 95 north to Fredericksburg and follow the directions from there. An alternate, more scenic route (meaning slower roads), would be to follow Interstate 64 west about 25 miles to the Gum Spring exit. Pick up route 522 north and follow it about 55 miles to Culpeper. Continue through Culpeper on route 522 (watch those turns) and follow it about 18 more miles to Sperryville. In Sperryville pick up route 211 west and follow it about 14 miles over the mountain to Luray. In Luray pick up route 340 north and follow it 14 mile to the village of Bentonville. In Bentonville turn left on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it one mile down a winding road to the river. There are two separate outfitters at the river, so it can be confusing. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the adventure begins. (Either route should take a little less than three hours driving time.)

From Skyline Drive

Exit the Skyline Drive at Panorama Wayside (mile marker 30) and take route 211 west for 8 miles; turn right on to route 340 north and follow it 14 miles to the village of Bentonville; turn left on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it 1 mile; as you emerge from the woods you will encounter two outfitters. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the Adventure Begins!

From Virginia Beach

From Virginia Beach simply follow Interstate 64 west to Richmond and follow the directions from there. I think the fastest way is to go via Fredericksburg. Driving time is about four and a half hours.

From Washingon D.C.

Follow interstate 66 west off the beltway for 54 miles to the first Front Royal exit (exit 13-Linden/Front Royal); exit here and pick up route 55 west and follow it 5 miles into Front Royal; keep going straight (past McDonald's) to a "T" intersection (3rd traffic light); turn left on to route 340 south and follow it 10 miles to the village of Bentonville; just past a big white church on your right, turn right on to route 613 (Indian Hollow Road) and follow it 1 mile; as you emerge from the woods you will encounter two outfitters. We are the outfitter on the right, Downriver Canoe Company. Now the Adventure Begins!

Directions to the Campground
From the village of Bentonville follow route 340 south for four and a half miles. At this point you will be decending a long hill. At the bottom of the hill turn right immediately before the bridge across Compton Creek. This is the entrance to our campground. As you decend into the campground you will pass through a gate opening with a sign that says, "NO TRESPASSING not open to public, Downriver Canoe Company patrons only". You will then pass under a very high railroad trestle. Welcome to Golden Rock Campground. At the campsites to the right down by the river we do not allow vehicles. There are several big wheel carts to help move your gear to the river front sites. The sites in the field to the left are open to vehicles. Please be considerate of other campers and enjoy the most beautiful spot on the river.
