RIVER CONDITIONS

Updated On: Wednesday, May 16, 2012
River Level: Too Damn High
The River Level Is: Falling
River Temperature: 64 degrees F. / 18 C.
Clarity: Very Muddy - (coffee and Cream)
Heavy rainfall in our upper watershed has boosted the river into our "Too Damn High" category. We anticipate being able to operate again by Friday, but for today and Thursday we advise staying off the river. This high muddy water will curtail the fishing for the next few days as well. The river level is falling rapidly on our upper river gauges so we anticipate excellent water levels for this coming weekend. For those doing our overnight floats, please note the entrance to our campground has changed. It is now located about 200 yards north of where it used to be. Look for number 9751 prominently displayed at the turn off. See you on the river.

PLEASE NOTE:

Be advised river conditions can change rapidly with sudden storms or heavy rain in the upper watershed. Also, water temperature can vary up to 6 degrees or more in a single day. To find out more detail about current conditions, try these links:

A link to the Luray River Gauge. (Over 6' is too high to canoe, 3' to 5' is ideal, lower than 2.3' is very low.)

River Level Descriptions

TOO DAMN HIGH
No canoes will be rented when the river is too damn high, no exceptions.
HIGH
River is swift and powerful, use extra caution at Compton Rapid and the Low Water Bridge. Small rapids smoothed over. Keep those lifevests zipped up.
NORMAL
The ideal canoeing level. Lots of small rapids to play in.
LOW
Canoe will bump and scrape some, but canoeists should not have to step out of their canoes. Trips take longer.
VERY LOW
Shorten up your trip. Canoeist will have to step out of their canoes from time to time, but even at this level the river can still be quite enjoyable if you take your time.
